As Isaiah Thomas, Derrick Rose, and Iman Shumpert continue to recover from their respective injuries, Jose Calderon will receive the start at the point guard spot on Monday when the Cleveland Cavaliers face off against the Detroit Pistons.
Tyronn Lue confirmed the development during the Cavs’ practice on Sunday, and also spoke about Calderon’s importance to the team. The third-year head coach only had good words to say about the Spanish international, and also revealed that he will play a crucial role for the defending Eastern Conference champions as the season progresses.
Lue is also hoping that Calderon will get his groove back in order to run the offense well for his team.
Jose Calderon is a 13-year NBA veteran who has appeared in seven games so far this season for the Cavs, but has only seen an average of 6.7 minutes per game. With all three aforementioned players injured, it will be his chance to prove his worth to the Cavs.
Being the veteran that he is, Calderon brings court savvy through his knack for playmaking with less errors and hitting the open shots to compliment the games of LeBron James and Kevin Love, who. Should Calderon provide quality minutes, it will ease the pressure off his teammates to run the point guard duties, and just focus on scoring and defending especially on crucial stretches.
