Early on Monday morning, ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that John Beilein has agreed to join the Cavs on a five-year deal as the team’s next head coach.
Beilein, now 66 years of age, spent 12 successful season with the University of Michigan. With the Wolverines, he became the school’s winningest coach and led the team to a pair of Big Ten regular-season championships and two Big Ten Tournament titles.
Shortly after his hiring went public, Beilein decided to send out a thank you message to the Wolverine faithful:
“Thanks to everyone at the Univ. of Michigan for their incredible support these last 12 years. Our fans, alums, leaders, players and students are AMAZING. It has been a heck of a ride and I hope you enjoyed our teams and staff as much as I did! Go Blue Forever!”
Beilein replaces Larry Drew as Cleveland’s playcaller. Drew took over for Tyronn Lue just six games into the 2018-19 campaign. Under Drew, the Cavs recorded a 19-63 overall record and missed the playoffs for the first time in four consecutive seasons.
Beilein holds an overall win/loss record of 829-468 in the collegiate ranks. He racked up 20-plus win seasons on 23 occasions and finished with a winning record in 35 seasons, placing him in the top-10 for career victories among active Division I head coaches.
The Cavs interviewed several candidates for their head coaching vacancy, but they ultimately felt comfortable with Beilein’s ability to teach the game. Now he’ll look to build a relationship with Cleveland’s young roster.
According to ESPN, Beilein is expected to join the Cavs’ coaching staff in Chicago for the draft lottery and combine this week.
Cleveland is projected to have a top pick in the upcoming draft.
Most experts feel that Duke’s Zion Williamsom will be the No. 1 overall selection.
