The Cleveland Cavaliers got one step closer to completing their roster on Thursday by agreeing to a partially guaranteed deal with JP Macura, as reported by Athletic writer Joe Vardon:
Macura was undrafted in the 2018 draft but was picked up by the Charlotte Hornets on a two-way contract. He played in only two games for the Hornets, logging a total of six points, three rebounds, and two assists.
JP Macura is much better known for his time at Xavier, where he played all four years. In his senior season, the 6’5 shooting guard averaged 12.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.9 assists a game. He started all 34 games he played for the Musketeers.
Macura was known for being a solid scorer and shooter with the ability to post up smaller players. He showed strong defensive ability and was a good free-throw shooter, shooting 80 percent from the line.
Unfortunately for Macura, he is undersized for the coveted wing position in today’s NBA, and not athletic enough to match up with quicker, smaller point guards. He is a tweener who doesn’t have a true position.
The Cavaliers will have plenty of time to give JP Macura a chance to show the team he belongs in the league. The team will not be contenders this year. It is focused on developing Collin Sexton and Darius Garland. Perhaps Macura can be another successful project.
