During the early portion of the season, the Boston Celtics have zoomed out to an impressive start as they are currently holding an NBA-best 13-2 record by winning 13 straight games.
Despite the Cleveland Cavaliers’ struggles up to this point, they are still deemed as the team to beat in the Eastern Conference. All of this could potentially line up an Eastern Conference Finals rematch between the Cavs and Celtics, which is something that All-Star point guard Isaiah Thomas is hoping for come May, according to Jared Weiss of Celtics Wire.
“Oh, that would be lovely,” Thomas said with a laugh. “That would be a special moment. If they make it there, and we make it there, and then we clash…”
It would provide Thomas the opportunity to get back at the Celtics for giving up on him, with a chance to reach the first NBA Finals of his career. There would be plenty of motivation for him to play at a high level against his former team that he once called home.
That said, the Celtics have quickly proven to be a formidable team in the Eastern Conference with this current hot stretch that they are on after a 0-2 start to the season. What has been most impressive is that it was done without the services of All-Star Gordon Hayward, who is out for the season with a broken left leg that required surgery.
There are still many moving pieces before this possible rematch happens such as Isaiah Thomas returning from hip injury while the Cavs must resolve their early-season struggles. If these things can both work out in the Cavs’ favor, there is no reason to believe these two teams won’t be facing off once again next May.
