The Cleveland Cavaliers made a big splash on Thursday by acquiring Andre Drummond from the Detroit Pistons.
Cavs general manager Koby Altman spoke to Cavs reporters on Friday and explained why he made the move to bring Drummond to Cleveland:
“I think it’s hard to go completely young and be non-competitive,” Altman said. “That’s not what we’re about. I tell our coaching staff and our players every game, go out there and try to win.
“I do want our guys to develop playing competitive, meaningful basketball. This addition adds to that.”
Drummond is averaging 17.8 points, 15.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists this season. He’s shooting 53.0 percent from the field and 58.4 percent from the free-throw line.
The Cavs have a worse record than the Pistons. Cleveland is 13-39, while Detroit is 19-34.
Drummond can become an unrestricted free agent after this season ends if he declines his 2020-21 player option worth $28.8 million. The Cavs will use the rest of this season to determine if Drummond is a good fit next to guards Collin Sexton and Darius Garland.
For his career, Drummond puts up 14.4 points and 15.8 rebounds per game.
