Cleveland Cavaliers head coach John Beilein isn’t sure how rookie Dylan Windler will be able to contribute to the team next season, but it’s not for reasons that you might think.
Beilein seems to be very optimistic about the potential of Windler, the 26th pick in this year’s NBA Draft. In an interview with Cleveland.com’s Chris Fedor, the neophyte coach said that the 22-year-old guard is capable of playing in multiple positions, and although he’s still unsure about what Windler’s role will be, Beilein said that he can definitely become a key member of the team.
“He really just feels and sees the game at a pace you don’t see a lot of people do it. I think he is going to have good numbers with us over time in passing, assists, deflections and steals. He just sees the game very well. I don’t know exactly what (his role) is going to be, whether we are going to play him at guard or forward, but he’s a player. His size, 6-foot-7, with pretty good handle and pretty good vision, he can play a lot of spots.”
Windler has been really impressive in both the Salt Lake City and Las Vegas Summer Leagues, and with the Cavs looking to build around their young core, he could see a lot of minutes next season.
While most of the talk around the Cavs are about the development of Colin Sexton and the potential of Darius Garland, Windler is slowly but surely making his presence felt, and he’s starting to put the league on notice.
