After three consecutive appearances, many expect the Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors to meet once again in the 2018 NBA Finals. While the Boston Celtics and Houston Rockets are considered major threats to dethroning them, it is difficult to go against LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry.
As the Warriors re-signed their core players and improved their bench depth, the Cavaliers made significant changes during the offseason. One of the new players is Dwyane Wade, who had the following to say prior to the Christmas Day matchup according to Dave McMenamin of ESPN:
At 35 years old and in his 15th NBA season, Wade understands it is not a true rivalry until teams meet on the biggest stage. In addition, both teams will not be at full strength as Curry (ankle) and Isaiah Thomas (hip) are not playing.
After a slow 7-7 start to the 2017-18 NBA season, the Cavaliers have won 17 out of their last 19 games. Through Cleveland learning how to play with each other and all of the significant injuries, LeBron James is leading the way, averaging 28.4 points, 8.2 rebounds, and 9.2 assists in his 15th season.
After Christmas Day, their second matchup takes place on Jan. 15 in Cleveland. With five months in between a potential Finals rematch, it will be interesting to see the progress of both teams as the Cavaliers look to win their second championship in four seasons.
