The Cleveland Cavaliers are by no means a one-man show, but against the physically-imposing Detroit Pistons, Donovan Mitchell knows he will have to be offensively creative. He is already breaking out some of his favorite tricks in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals.

Just a few minutes into the first quarter, Mitchell used his trusty windmill gather move to get past veteran forward Tobias Harris before sinking a floater over young center Jalen Duren. He is enjoying a hot start, but Detroit had the clear advantage at halftime (59-46).

Both the Cavs and Pistons are coming off grueling seven-game series to begin their 2026 postseason journeys, so some fatigue should be expected, especially for the visiting squad. Offensive production may be hard to come by against a defense that ranked in the top three in points, field goal percentage and 3-point field goal percentage allowed during the regular season.

Mitchell must take it upon himself to ignite Cleveland. He has ability to slash into the lane and knock down a bucket from deep, making him one of the most well-rounded scorers in the NBA today. But Spida can only carry the Cavs for so long.

This group must collectively decipher the Pistons’ defense. The alternative is more playoff anguish, which would send this patient fan base into another painful offseason. Donovan Mitchell is doing what he can to make sure that such a fate does not befall this franchise or city again.

He may have to unload his full arsenal if the Cavaliers are going to steal Game 1 in Little Caesars Arena.
