The next few days will be heavy for Donovan Mitchell and the Cleveland Cavaliers as they are likely to reflect and conduct a post-mortem of their sweep at the hands of the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals.

The Cavaliers were pounded by the Knicks, 130-93, in Game 4. Early on, it became increasingly clear that Cleveland had no chance against the sweltering surge of New York.

Mitchell tried to rally his teammates in the first half when they trailed by 20 points, delivering a high-spirited speech on the bench. It, however, may have fallen on deaf ears as the Cavaliers played even worse in the second half.

The 29-year-old guard took accountability for the loss. He also issued a defiant reminder.

“I’m sorry for the city of Cleveland for it to be like this, a sweep. That’s a**. You know what I mean?” said Mitchell in the postgame conference.

“But I told y’all last year, and I’ll tell y’all again, we will be back. We’ll be ready, we’ll be hungry, we’ll be locked in.”

He added that they are going through a process, pointing out that the Knicks had a similar experience in recent years before finally breaking through.

Mitchell tallied a game-high 31 points and four rebounds in Game 4. He shot 9-of-18 from the field, including 5-of-9 from three-point range.

The seven-time All-Star averaged 26.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.1 assists, and 1.2 steals in the playoffs, leading the Cavaliers to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018.

Mitchell is eligible for a contract extension in July, and he made it clear that he does not want to go anywhere else.
