Derrick Rose may be a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers now, but the Chicago-native is still making an effort to give back to the city he loves.
Rose has taken note of Demetrius Nash’s worthy cause. Nash, a fellow Chicagoan, is walking (yes, walking) all the way to Washington, D.C. from his neighborhood home in Bronzeville to raise awareness for gun violence.
On Monday, Rose and his partner, Mieka Blackman-Reese, decided to donate $7,000 to Nash’s GoFundMe campaign.
“We’re proud of all the great work you’re doing to save the youth of Chicago and providing a framework for at-risk youth for sustainability by providing training for a trade and mentoring via positive & successful mentors,” Rose and Blackman-Reese wrote in a comment on the campaign’s GoFundMe. “God bless you with safe travels on your journey.”
As an Englewood local, Rose saw the realities of Chicago’s inner-city violence first hand. In fact, the former Marquette Golden Eagle has paid for and attended the funerals of murder victims in the past.
In September of 2014, Rose donated $1 million to After School Matters, a Chicago organization that offers extracurricular activities for the city’s youth.
As of today (Tuesday), Nash’s GoFundMe donations stand at $21,790, just short of his $25,000 goal.
