Cleveland Cavalier defensive guard David Nwaba may not be a household name right now. He might not ever be, being a really good under the radar type of player which is not a knock on his talent — a compliment, actually. Despite being undrafted, the new Cavs player really capitalizes on the minutes given to him.

Showcasing a sample size with the Chicago Bulls last season, he averaged 7.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game in 23.5 minutes while shooting 34 percent from the 3-point line. Those are not eye-popping numbers in any way, but much like his path to the NBA, he has demonstrated grit and tenacity that would catch any team’s attention.

According to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, the Indiana Pacers were interested in the defensive-minded guard. Nwaba recounted the event and said:

“Indiana wanted me for two years, but Cleveland seemed like a better fit… Young guys as well as veterans on this team so I thought it was a perfect fit and knew I was going to get my opportunity here.”

He added:

“I thought I should prove myself before taking any offer long-term… I chose the one year and bet on myself.”

With his upward career trajectory paired with individual talent and confidence, betting on himself sounds like a good idea for the 25-year-old guard. His intriguing skillset is nearly three-and-D ready with his bulldog-type of defense. With a consistent 3-pointer, he may cash in on a payday once his contract ends.

With a lot of changes for the LeBron James-less Cavs, it would be safe to say that Nwaba will get a crack at some minutes. Despite a lot of uncertainties in the team, how the promising Nwaba will standout and breakout this season is a good enough reason to keep an eye out for the Cavaliers.
