Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland may be trending in the right direction for Cleveland’s season opener vs. the Brooklyn Nets.
“Meanwhile, #Cavs Darius Garland went thru shootaround like normal this morning,” Cleveland.com Cavs reporter Chris Fedor wrote in a Wednesday tweet. “All signs point to him being available tonight.”
Garland missed Cleveland’s final preseason game against the Indiana Pacers.
“Garland, sources say, is dealing with something minor but there’s no concern about his availability moving forward,” Fedor wrote in a Friday article. “The Cavs are choosing to give him an extra rest night with the season opener in Brooklyn fast approaching.”
Forward Dean Wade will be out for the Cavs against the Nets, according to a Wednesday tweet from Right Down Euclid’s Evan Dammarell.
“Dean Wade is now out tonight for the #Cavs tonight against the Brooklyn Nets,” Dammarell wrote.
Garland, the No. 5 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, averaged 21.6 points and 7.8 assists per game for the Cavs during the 2022-23 season. He scored a season-high 51 points during a five-point loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves last November.
Cavs guard Donovan Mitchell would score 28 points and dish four assists during the 109-104 preseason loss to the Pacers. Forward Evan Mobley and guard Caris LeVert added a combined 30 points in their starting roles for the Cavs on Friday. Pacers guard Buddy Hield led Indiana with 20 points in 18 minutes of play off the bench.
Cleveland would lose by three points in their opening game against the Toronto Raptors during the 2022-23 season before going on an eight-game winning streak. In its early-season winning streak, it would earn wins over the Boston Celtics, New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers. Its red-hot start to the year ended at the hands of the Los Angeles Clippers, who defeated the Cavs in a two-point victory at home behind 26 points from forward Paul George.
The Cavs will tip off against the Nets at 7:30 p.m. EDT in the Barclays Center on Wednesday. The game will be broadcast on Bally Sports Ohio.
