All signs are pointing towards a breakout season from Cleveland Cavaliers guard Darius Garland in 2021-22. To further validate such a claim, a group of NBA executives expressed their high expectations from the Cavs playmaker.
Garland topped a recent poll among front office decision-makers, conducted by HoopsHype.com, on their best breakout candidate in the upcoming season.
“In theory, you’re picking a younger player who hasn’t broken out yet because of some reason, whether it’s either injuries or team dynamics, and they still have to have untapped upside,” an NBA executive explained. “Garland checks those boxes.”
The fifth overall pick of the 2019 NBA Draft is coming off a strong campaign in 2020-21, where he averaged 17.4 points and 6.1 assists per game while shooting 39.5% from 3-point distance.
It was a huge uptick from a rookie season ravaged by injuries and a rough adjustment period for Garland. In year two, the former Vanderbilt standout showcased the qualities which the Cavs front office adored before his selecting him on draft night.
Not only does Darius Garland own a smooth shooting stroke, but his knack for navigating through traffic and finding teammates screams star potential. All of these skills were highlighted last season, giving Cavs fans high hopes for their team’s future with Garland leading the way.
Darius Garland will a new weapon at his disposal in rookie Evan Mobley. He will be backed up by veteran point guard Ricky Rubio, who figures to be a valuable mentor for Garland.
