Cleveland Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton left Sunday’s win over the New York Knicks early with a knee injury. The results have come back and it appears that he has torn his meniscus, the Cavs announced on Monday:
This is certainly a huge blow for the Cavs. While Sexton hasn’t been putting up the type of numbers as last season, he’s still been a key component to their offense. The former Alabama star is averaging 16.1 points, 3.3 boards, and 2.2 assists, but he was shooting a dismal 24% from three-point land.
Sexton exited in the second quarter on Sunday but Ricky Rubio came in and absolutely showed out. The veteran erupted for a team-high 37 en route to a huge victory over New York. It’s unknown at this point as to how long Sexton could be out for the Cavs, but it will surely be a while.
That being said, Rubio should get starting minutes now alongside Darius Garland in the Cleveland backcourt. Although it’s definitely an unfortunate turn of events, the Cavs should be able to stay afloat. After all, this roster is a lot stronger than a year ago with the additions of Evan Mobley, Lauri Markkanen, and Rubio. Jarrett Allen is also looking solid in the frontcourt.
The Cavs are off to an impressive 7-4 start and have won four straight. They have a couple of days off before facing the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night at home.
