The Cleveland Cavaliers turned heads when they picked another point guard in the 2019 NBA Draft. The Cavs selected Darius Garland as the fourth pick in the draft last month just a year removed from acquiring Collin Sexton. Some fans wondered how the two point guards will fit in, but Sexton expressed confidence that they can make it work like the Portland Trail Blazers guard duo of CJ McCollum and Damian Lillard.
Sexton told ESPN that he has no doubt in mind that having two ball-dominant guards could work in the league, saying that their ceiling is the Lillard-McCollum combination. He also pointed out that even Kyle Lowry and Fred VanVleet of the Toronto Raptors had a lot of success running the two-guard offense.
Garland, on the other hand, is also optimistic that he and Sexton will thrive together. The rookie point guard said that he trusts new Cavaliers head coach John Beilein because of his experience running the offense with dynamic guards during his coaching stints in the collegiate ranks.
“I think it’s going to be great,” Garland said. “Coach B is usually playing two guards, so I think that we’re going to fit right in. The future looks bright for both of us, so I’m excited about it.”
The 19-year-old rookie was one of the intriguing prospects heading into last month’s draft despite getting limited opportunities to showcase his skills in college basketball last season. Garland played just five games for Vanderbilt in college, where he averaged 16.2 points on top of 3.8 rebounds and 2.6 assists per game.
