A newly-confirmed CBA change on super-max restrictions will benefit the Cleveland Cavs greatly.
There have been a number of widespread changes as a result of the latest CBA update and one particular change will see teams no longer being restricted to just two designated super-max players.
This, of course, has positive implications for a number of teams but none more so than the Cavs and the long-term future of their big three featuring Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland and Evan Mobley.
“NBA and NBPA agreed to eliminate restrictions limiting a team to two designated super-max players,” ESPN reporter Adrian Wojnarowski reported on Sunday. “This would have a huge impact for Cavs, who have Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland on super max deals and Evan Mobley approaching rookie extension.”
As noted by Woj, Mitchell and Garland are already on super-max deals. And with Mobley approaching his rookie extension, Cleveland will be able offer him a super-max deal and essentially keep their big three — all under the age of 26 — at the franchise for the considerable future.
Of course, such a move will likely come at the cost of depth as the CBA update also prevents high-spending teams above a second-apron of luxury tax from sending cash in deals, trading first-round picks seven years away or signing players in the buyout market.
So all in all, the Cavs will have to be very careful about how they structure their roster going forward.
The Cavs are in the playoffs for the first time without LeBron James since 1998 as they currently sit as the No. 4 seed in the East with a 48-30 record.
