On Wednesday afternoon, the Cleveland Cavaliers officially announced that 7-3 center Walter “Edy” Tavares had been waived. As a result, their roster now stands at 19 men.
As most hoops fans know, NBA teams are allowed to have 15 men on their respective rosters, as well as a pair of two-way contracts for players being sent to the G-League.
Tavares, a 25-year-old prospect who was on a non-guaranteed contract with the Cavs, showed signs of promise. His length and shot-blocking expertise left most fans of the team asking for more. However, with the recent influx of talent in Cleveland’s roster, it seems as though head coach Tyronn Lue was left with no choice.
According to Joe Vardon of cleveland.com, the Cavs are unable to send Tavares to their G-League affiliate team (Canton Charge). As it turns out, the Toronto Raptors own the Cape Verde native’s G-League rights.
Coach Lue will have a few more difficult decisions to make before the start of the 2017-18 regular season. Let’s just wait and see what new developments await on the Wine and Gold horizon.
