Just days after the Cleveland Cavaliers parted ways with head coach Larry Drew, the Cavs seem to have already begun narrowing down possible choices as his replacement.
According to ESPN NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the Cavs have begun conducting interviews in their coaching search this week, and both Juwan Howard and Dallas Mavericks assistant Jamahl Mosley will be included in those interviews.
According to Wojnarowski, the Cavs are also expected to meet with assistants on teams involved in the playoffs later in the coming months, with general manager Koby Altman planning to meet with an expansive list of candidates in an effort to locate the best man to replace Drew.
Howard, who played 19 years in the NBA, retired with the Miami Heat in 2013, and has been a part of Erik Spoelstra’s coaching staff ever since. Per Wojnarowski’s report, Howard has developed a good reputation throughout the league, with the former player even interviewing for the Detroit Pistons’ coaching job last season.
When it comes to Mosley, he has former experience with the Cavaliers, as he spent four years there as an assistant before leaving in 2014 to join the Denver Nuggets for three years.
From there, he moved on to the Dallas Mavericks, and looks to be wanting to move up in the pecking order.
The Cavaliers finished the season with the third worst record in the NBA, and will be one of the three teams (along with the New York Knicks and Phoenix Suns) that hold the best possible odds at having the number one overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft.
