On a warm, muggy 4th of July holiday in Northeast Ohio, the Cleveland Cavaliers officially welcomed rookie point guard Collin Sexton to the team with a four-year contract worth up to $20.2 million.
As most fans of the team know, the Cavs selected Sexton with their No. 8 overall pick in this year’s NBA Draft. Without a doubt, they’re looking to develop the young ball-handler right away.
“We’re going to invest a lot of time into him and he’s a part of this culture now of winning, of hard work, attitude, the stuff we talk about,” Cavs general manager Koby Altman said of Sexton during his introductory news conference last month.
Sexton is truly a gifted player. He has excellent court vision and a smooth stroke, as they say. The 19-year-old played 33 games with the Alabama Crimson Tide last season, averaging 19.2 points on 44.7 percent shooting from the field (33.6 percent from beyond the arc), 3.8 rebounds, 3.6 assists, and just under one steal (0.8) in 29.9 minutes per.
Per league rules, the most he could earn this season was about $4.1 million, based on where he was selected. And that amount — $4.07 million — is what he’ll get, a source told Joe Vardon of cleveland.com. Rookie contracts are guaranteed for the first two years, with team options for the last two years.
According to Vardon, Sexton is expected to suit up with the Cavs in this year’s NBA Summer League, which kicks off on Friday in Las Vegas.
