With the preseason over and the 2023-24 NBA season starting season, the Cleveland Cavaliers needed to make a decision for their final roster. And they didn’t waste time doing so, with the Cavs making cuts on Friday in preparation for the new campaign.
The Cavs waived seven players after carrying 19 players into training camp. The team needed to cut the roster down to the required 15 anyway, so it really didn’t come as a shock. And for a loaded team like Cleveland, it’s just hard for new players to prove themselves and get an opportunity to do so.
Among those released are Sharife Cooper, Pete Nance, Justin Powell and Zhaire Smith, per Keith Smith of Spotrac. Furthermore, the Cavs signed and waived Rob Edwards, Aleem Ford and Devontae Shuler as they finalize their roster.
Of course there are a number of familiar names on the list, including Smith who was the 16th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft. Smith played for two seasons with the Philadelphia 76ers but never got the chance to grow and prove himself while in the City of Brotherly love. A foot injury and allergic reaction further derailed his career, preventing him from really establishing himself as a serviceable player in the league.
Meanwhile, Nance is the brother of Larry Nance Jr. and son of NBA legend Larry Nance–both of whom played for Wine and Gold. Unfortunately for the younger Nance, he wouldn’t get the chance to continue the legacy.
Despite the cuts, the Cavs are definitely in a good position with their core of Donovan Mitchell, Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley leading the way. They also have a strong supporting crew in Isaac Okoro, Caris LeVert, Georges Niang, Max Strus and Tristan Thompson backing their top dogs. And who could forget about promising rookie Emoni Bates?
The Cavs are well poised to compete for the postseason once again with the roster they have. Sure enough, exciting times are ahead for Cleveland.
