There has been a lot of speculation within and around the Cleveland Cavaliers squad throughout what turned out to be an eventful summer. One of the most intriguing rumors centered around Collin Sexton and his future with the Cavs. While all signs are pointing to the fact that Sexton will remain with the team for the upcoming season, his long-term future in Cleveland still remains uncertain at this point.
According to Cavs insider Sam Amico of Hoops Wire, the team’s front office are still unsure if the pairing of Sexton and Darius Garland has the makings of the squad’s backcourt of the future:
This is the year where the Cavs will decide if Collin Sexton and Darius Garland are truly the Starting Backcourt of the Future. I’ve repeatedly been told that decision hasn’t been reached. The Cavs are hopeful that it is — but they aren’t sure.
The Cavs are very high on Garland, and the general belief is that he is considered a key piece of the team’s core. Sexton, on the other hand, has already been linked to several trade rumors, which likely means that if one of them has to go, then it would probably be Collin Sexton.
It is also worth noting that Sexton is currently entering the final year of his current deal with the Cavs. Unless he signs an extension in the near future, he’s going to be a free agent next summer. This could provide extra motivation for Cleveland to try and move him now instead of letting him walk away for nothing in the offseason. That is unless they intend to sign him to a big-money extension.
