The Cleveland Cavaliers have hit another milestone during the incredible 2024-25 NBA season that they are having. On Sunday, the Cavs notched their 60th victory of the campaign after taking care of business at Rocket Arena in Cleveland versus James Harden and the visiting Los Angeles Clippers. The Cavaliers’ 127-122 win against Los Angeles improved their record to 60-15.
Additionally, the Cavs have now officially won at least 60 games in a season for the first time since the days of the duo of LeBron James and Shaquille O’Neal.
Before this season, the last time the Cavaliers reached the 60-win plateau was way back in the 2009-10 campaign when James was still 25 years old and Shaq was on the back nine of his legendary career in the NBA. That season, Cleveland went 61-21 behind James’ incredible year. He won the NBA’s Most Valuable Player award that season, as he averaged 29.7 points, 8.6 assists and 7.3 rebounds per game while shooting 50.3 percent from the field. Meanwhile, Shaq posted 12.0 points, 6.7 rebounds and 1.2 blocks per contest while making 56.6 percent of his attempts from the floor.
However, James and the Cavs failed to go deep in the playoffs. After eliminating the Chicago Bulls in the first round, 4-1, the Cavaliers got taken out by the Boston Celtics in the second round, 4-2.
Fifteen years later, Donovan Mitchell and the current iteration of the Cavaliers are looking to do better than the aforementioned version of Cleveland. The Cavs have their share of ups and downs this season but appear to have what it takes to win it all. They have constantly proven themselves not just as among the top teams in the East but in the entire league as well.
Cleveland has the top seed in the Eastern Conference already locked up regardless of what happens the rest of the way in the regular season, though, they still need to win more games in order to get a better e of securing the homecourt advantage should they make it to the NBA Finals. At the moment, the Oklahoma City Thunder have the best record in the NBA.
The Cavs also have a shot at breaking their franchise record for most wins in a regular season but they will have to win out. The 2008-09 Cavs own the record with 66 victories. Cleveland has to win all their remaining seven games to break the record.
