The Cleveland Cavaliers’ triumph over the Golden State Warriors back in the 2016 NBA Finals was one of the greatest sporting achievements ever. No team in NBA history had ever come back from a 3-1 deficit on the biggest stage in basketball, and yet, led by Greatest of All Time candidate and Ohio native LeBron James, the Cavs did the improbable, against a team that set the record for most wins in a regular season, no less.
And now, one lucky Cavs fan gets to immortalize the greatest comeback that spawned a million memes.
One lucky bidder won a 2016 Cleveland Cavaliers NBA Championship staff ring from an auction listing posted on Dallas-based Heritage Auctions. The bidding ended last Sunday.
Dan Gilbert, for all his faults as an owner, was always willing to spend to win, and it was through Gilbert that a staff employee was able to auction off this piece of sweet memorabilia. The winning bid for the 2016 Cavs ring was $4,320.
Other related Cavs memorabilia sold during the auction was a 2006 LeBron James signed St. Vincent St. Mary’s jersey, the winning bid for which was $5,640.
In 2016, Cleveland saw its 52-year title drought come to an end, thanks in large part to LeBron’s block heard ’round the world and Kyrie’s magical three-pointer that put the Cavs ahead for good. The last championship the city of Cleveland celebrated before 2016 was in 1964, when the Cleveland Browns triumphed in the Super Bowl.
Owning a memento as a reminder of one of the greatest victories in sports history should be an awesome experience, as Cleveland fans know that winning trophies isn’t something to be taken for granted.
