The Cleveland Cavaliers have been crippled with injuries all season, but were helped with immediate production out of the newest Cavalier, Derrick Williams.
Williams was waived by the Miami Heat on February 6th, as soon as he cleared waivers the Cavaliers pounced on the former 2nd overall pick. In his two games with the Cavs, Williams has filled a much needed void at the forward position, averaging 9.5 points on 80% shooting in 20.8 minutes per game.
Due to his solid play, it looks like he may be a Cavalier for at least another 10 days.
With news of Kevin Love‘s injury, Williams’ addition won’t be for lowly minutes off the bench, he’ll likely be a major part of the rotation.
If LeBron James had his way, he’d have Williams on the team for much longer, per ESPN.
“We hope that this is a long-term thing,” James said of Williams after the Cavs’ 125-109 win over the Denver Nuggets on Saturday. “Obviously, we know that he’s on a 10-day contract, but we believe it’s going to be long-term.”
Williams and his Cavaliers will next take on the Timberwolves in Minnesota, the team that drafted Williams, on Tuesday night.
