Since news broke out about Kyrie Irving requesting a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers, there have been numerous speculations why he demanded such, and which team he’ll play for next. It has also drawn the opinion of a lot of members of the basketball community as his potential move from Northeast Ohio could deal a serious blow to the Cavs.
Golden State Warriors star forward Kevin Durant became the latest to speak about the developing saga, which has taken the league by storm. He shared his thoughts, via Chris Haynes of ESPN, and said that the surprising development is just a normal problem in the league today. He also added that he believes Irving and LeBron James will be able to figure things out soon.
“It’s just a regular NBA problem, right? A lot of teams have gone through this before,” Durant told ESPN. “They’ll figure it out. That’s a great organization, a championship organization. They’ll figure it out.”
“It’s not the end of the world,” Durant said. “Both of those guys won a championship together. They love each other. If Kyrie wants to do something else, that’s on him. I’m sure whatever happens, it’ll work out for the best for both of them. But it’s just a normal NBA problem. It’s just two big stars that it’s happening to.”
Durant is no stranger to the situation, as he and Russell Westbrook were also involved in something similar during his days with the Oklahoma City Thunder. However, when he decided to leave his former team to join the Dubs last summer, his relationship with this year’s MVP was significantly dented.
It remains to be seen if Irving and James will also end up having the same scenario, but for now it’s still anyone’s guess how the saga will end. No team has emerged as a favorite to land Uncle Drew’s services, but if he and The King will be able to fix whatever rift they may have, there’s still a chance the All-Star point guard will continue his career with the Cavs.
