Prior to yesterday’s 126-125 overtime loss to the Atlanta Hawks inside Philips Arena, Cleveland Cavaliers GM David Griffin made the decision to waive shooting guard and defensive specialist DeAndre Liggins.
Chris Reichert, editor at The Step Back, reports that the Cavaliers, who have just two games remaining in the regular season, will fill their newly-created empty roster spot with a familiar face: 36-year old veteran forward, Dahntay Jones. Most Cavs fans will remember Jones from last year’s run for the title and the role he played in Game 6 of the NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors.
Jones inked a deal with the Cavs around this time during last year’s campaign, but the scenario is a bit different this go-round. Last season, Jones spent a lot of his time in the D-League. This season, he has been working out in Cleveland quite a bit, staying in shape, and waiting for another call-up from the defending champs.
Due to his role in the Cavaliers’ championship run last year, Jones is already on good terms with several members of the team, including LeBron James and Kyrie Irving. Jones will bring energy off the bench, a defensive-minded style of play, and veteran savvy to a locker room that is known to be tightly knit.
