Philadelphia 76ers All-Star LeBron James wanted to show the Cleveland Cavs the utmost respect amidst free agency. Although the Cavs’ offseason pitch to LeBron for a reunion was ultimately turned down, James granted his team a one-on-one meeting at his home in Ohio in early July.
James met with the Cavs’ brass throughout the early stages of free agency, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
“The Cavs, the Sixers, the Miami — those were the finalists — really, for LeBron James,” Charania said. “But, interestingly enough, in the cloak of secrecy, LeBron James granted just one team an in-person meeting in free agency, and that was, sources tell me, the Cleveland Cavaliers. And that was in the early part of July. I’m told that LeBron met with Cavs brass in his home in Akron, Ohio.”
According to Charania, James felt it was only right to give the Cavs his undivided attention, which is something the 76ers and the Miami Heat can say they went through this summer.
“They sat together. Talked about his basketball legacy. What a reunion — a third stint in Cleveland — would look like,” Charania added. “And, of course, anytime you’re talking about LeBron going back to Cleveland, I think giving that meeting, granting that meeting to them, a lot of it, more than anything, was respect to the organization. We know about his history there. Led them to a championship for the first time in 50 years.
“He’s a hometown kid. Hometown team. He wanted to do right by the Cavs more than the Sixers or the Heat, by giving them that meeting.”
Although James ultimately inked a deal with the 76ers, the Cavs and the Heat were both reportedly top finalists to sign the four-time MVP.
“It’s also very clear through this that LeBron James wanted to seek something new, right? We’ve seen what he did in Cleveland. We know about that — you’re never going to outdo that,” Charania said. “We know he won multiple championships in Miami, as well. So, that is a part of the equation. But the other thing is, going into this meeting, my understanding is that this is two sides. The mutual respect.”

Now, the Cavs will revert to making contingency plans between now and the end of the offseason in preparation to build on last year’s appearance in the Eastern Conference Finals.
