After a 4-0 sweep of the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals, Cleveland Cavs All-Star point guard Donovan Mitchell signed a $273 million contract extension ahead of the 2026-27 season. It secured his future in Cleveland. Mitchell watched the Knicks celebrate their 2027 championship on Opening Night this week, adding extra motivation for a Cavs team that’s driven to reach the NBA Finals.
Ahead of his fifth year in Cleveland, Mitchell’s eager to lead the Cavs to a title, as he discussed ahead of Thursday’s regular-season opener, per Clevenad.com’s Chris Fedor.
“Everybody always says, ‘Why Cleveland? Why Cleveland?’
“Cleveland’s home,” Mitchell said. “I don’t ever want to wear another uniform. I don’t have that vision. Business is business. I understand how that works. There may be a situation where we may not be in a position to win anymore and business happens, right?
“… But the purpose behind this extension is to be here forever. … I’ve got to deliver. We’ve got to deliver. I’m not saying an extension guarantees a championship. But that’s the goal. It’s why I wake up every morning. I don’t want to be anywhere else. I don’t see it. Can’t ever picture it.
“I dream of myself being here forever and hopefully having 45 in the rafters one day.”
Cavs All-Star Donovan Mitchell, entering his sixth season in Cleveland, hopes to never wear another NBA uniform. And ahead of his first full season with future Hall of Fame guard James Harden, and newly acquired forward Peyton Watson, Mitchell believes the Cavs are in great shape to reach the NBA Finals in 2027.
