Coming off a disappointing loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder, Cleveland Cavaliers fans received some good news ahead of their next game. The Cavs have reportedly managed to steal Norchad Omier from the Minnesota Timberwolves.
NBA insider Michael Scotto reported that Omier has changed his mind about his next NBA destination after initially agreeing to a two-way contract with Minnesota. He now appears set to pursue his next NBA opportunity in Cleveland.
“After agreeing to a two-way deal with the Minnesota Timberwolves, Norchad Omier has changed his mind and plans to sign a two-way deal with the Cleveland Cavaliers, sources told @hoopshype. The Timberwolves now have an open two-way spot after waiving Enrique Freeman,” Scotto wrote.
The former Baylor standout spent training camp with Minnesota earlier this season, appearing in six preseason games before the team waived him. His familiarity with the Timberwolves organization made the reported reunion an understandable move before he decided to change course and explore an opportunity in Cleveland.
Omier has given NBA teams plenty of reasons to show interest in his services through his impressive performances in the G League. He averaged 18.3 points, 11.4 rebounds, and 2.5 assists while shooting 59.2% from the field across 38 G League appearances last season.
Omier also earned an NBA opportunity with the Los Angeles Clippers after signing a two-way contract following the 2026 NBA Draft. Omier made headlines at the time by becoming the first Nicaragua-born player to appear in an NBA game.
However, his stint in Los Angeles saw him appear in only six NBA games for the franchise before returning to the G League. Despite the limited opportunities, his performances outside the NBA have kept him in contention for another chance at the highest level.
Now, a potential move to Cleveland could give Omier another opportunity to establish himself in the NBA. For the Cavaliers, his rebounding ability and interior scoring could provide valuable frontcourt depth. However, just like rookie Meleek Thomas, Omier may also have to wait for his opportunity to earn meaningful playing time.
