LeBron James is continuing to give back to his hometown community.

On Tuesday, James  announced that his charitable foundations, I PROMISE and The LeBron James Family Foundation, will create a new public school in Akron.

The new school, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2018, was designed in partnership with the Akron public schools system and will focus on at-risk students who need attention in reading and other areas.

From the LeBron James Family Foundation:

“This school is so important to me because our vision is to create a place for the kids in Akron who need it most — those that could fall through the cracks if we don’t do something,” James said. “We’ve learned over the years what works and what motivates them, and now we can bring all of that together in one place along with the right resources and experts. If we get to them early enough, we can hopefully keep them on the right track to a bigger and brighter future for themselves and their families.”

Initially, the school will start out with third and fourth grade students. First and second grade classes are to be added in 2019. If everything goes as planned, the new school will have a full compliment of first through eighth grade classes by 2022.

According to the LJFF, the school will use the current Akron public school curriculum, but alter it a bit with a STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) focus coupled with the foundation’s  “We Are Family” philosophies.
