Josh Smith on Cavaliers' free agent radar

The Cleveland Cavaliers find themselves with an open roster spot, and are rumored to be hosting a mass free-agent workout.

Among those auditioning and working out for the Cavs are veteran point guards Mario Chalmers, Jordan Farmar, Kirk Hinrich, and swingman Lance Stephenson. Outside of those previously reported players, Cleveland are rumored to be keeping an eye on former NBA star, Josh Smith.

Smith has spent the past few months in the Chinese Basketball Association with the Sichuan Blue Whales. In his 26 games with the club, Smith is putting up nightly averages of 18.8 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 2.0 blocks. Although these numbers are impressive, the former NBA Slam Dunk Champion still has his issues.

In a November CBA game, Smith attempted 18 three-pointers. He made seven, which is impressive given his career 28.5 three-point percentage accrued in a dozen NBA seasons. Smith finished with 41 points, 19 rebounds, and five blocks in a 100-93 loss to the Guangdong Southern Tigers, who are led by former Laker, Yi Jianlian.

Cleveland’s recent stretch of games hasn’t been pretty on the defensive end of the floor, something that Smith may be able to help with. The offensive end is the problem, with his undisciplined play and tendency to shoot everything he catches.

The coming days will be exciting for the Cavs, with plenty of potential prospects, it seems we may have a new Cavalier in the near future.
