In August of 2016, Cleveland Cavaliers swingman Iman Shumpert was arrested and charged with a DUI count for operating a vehicle under the influence just outside of Atlanta, Georgia.
A Fayette County sheriff’s deputy initially stopped Shumpert for failing to maintain his lane. During the traffic stop, Shumpert reportedly admitted to smoking marijuana before driving. Reports indicate that the deputy then found a small amount of the drug in the trunk of the car.
According to Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com, Shumpert will not face a judge until after this season’s NBA Finals, as his court date is set for June 26th. Despite his admissions to the deputy, Shumpert filed a “not guilty” plea. If convicted in June, Shumpert, 26, would be placed in the NBA’s treatment program.
Per NBA policy, a second offense of this genre garners a $25,000 fine. A third offense carries the penalty of a five-game suspension.
