As the Cleveland Cavaliers have been surrounded by rumors regarding the offseason, there is no denying that the main focus was the question of whether LeBron James would return to where it all started. With James spurning the Cavs, the team was still busy at work in finding ways to add to the roster, with one name of interest being Denver Nuggets forward Cam Johnson.
According to ClutchPoints’ NBA insider Brett Siegel in his intel piece on James choosing the Philadelphia 76ers over the Cavs and other teams, Cleveland “also explored the possibility of pursuing” Johnson around the NBA Draft.
However, nothing materialized from Denver’s front, deciding to keep Johnson, who averaged 12.2 points, shooting 48 percent from the field and 43 percent from three-point range.
“Outside of pursuing LeBron this offseason and continuing to hold dialogue with Kuminga and his camp, the Cavs also explored the possibility of pursuing Denver Nuggets wing Cam Johnson at the time of the NBA Draft, sources said,” Siegel wrote. “While Denver was open to offers and interest coming their way for Johnson, no deal ever developed, and the belief has shifted to the Nuggets keeping the sharpshooting wing entering the 2026-27 season.”
The Cavs are not expected to drastically change the roster
Looking at other players that the Cavs were interested in this offseason was New Orleans Pelicans forward Herb Jones, though the asking price from the franchise is “exceptionally high.” Siegel would note how the Cleveland roster is not expected to drastically alter.
“Not much is expected to change regarding the Cavs’ roster, which is definitely a concern for them when looking at the rest of the Eastern Conference,” Siegel continued. “Miami and Philadelphia made championship-like jumps this offseason with their major superstar additions, Indiana will have their full core healthy and ready to go, and other teams like the Wizards, Raptors, and Hawks will be competitive teams in the East.”
At any rate, the Cavs signed Mario Hezonja and have reported interest in Jonathan Kuminga, as it remains to be seen where else the team looks to add to their roster.
