The Cleveland Cavaliers opened their 2026-27 NBA preseason with a 124-113 loss to the Boston Celtics on Thursday night, but newcomer Peyton Watson wasted little time showing why the organization invested $88 million in him this offseason.
Watson, who signed with Cleveland after spending his first four NBA seasons with the Denver Nuggets, finished with seven points, four rebounds, four assists and two blocks in 17 minutes. The 24-year-old forward shot 2-for-5 from the field, 1-for-4 from 3-point range and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line.
Despite the loss, Watson’s versatility stood out as he made his Cavaliers debut against a group of Celtics reserves.
According to Chris Fedor of Cleveland.com, Watson has already impressed teammates and coaches with his energy, athleticism and activity throughout training camp.
“He’s a dynamic player,” Cavaliers coach Kenny Atkinson said. “I want to see him in the short roll. I want to see him not just floating on the perimeter. I want to see him rebound and push the ball. Then cutting and offensive rebounding. He’s an active offensive player. He’s not just a spot-up guy.”
Peyton Watson earns early praise from Cavaliers teammates
Watson stepped into Cleveland’s starting small forward role following Dean Wade’s departure this offseason, providing the Cavaliers with an athletic, defensive-minded presence on the wing.
His performance also earned praise from teammate Craig Porter Jr., who emphasized Watson’s importance to Cleveland’s plans.
“He’s a dog,” Porter said. “He’s showing us why he’s going to be very important for us.”
While Watson’s offensive efficiency left room for improvement, his contributions across multiple categories offered an early indication of the versatility Cleveland expects from its significant investment.
The Cavaliers will continue their preseason Sunday against the Orlando Magic at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN before facing Orlando again Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET at Kia Center on NBC and Peacock.
