After parting ways with their previous general manager, David Griffin, the Cleveland Cavaliers are looking to add former Detroit Pistons great Chauncey Billups as President of Basketball Operations.

Discussions between the Cavs and Billups commenced on Tuesday, and according to ESPN’s Jeff Goodman, there will be a second meeting today.

Billups, 40, doesn’t have prior front office experience, but he does have a close relationship with Cavs head coach Tyronn Lue and team owner Dan Gilbert. If Billups were to be hired as the team’s top basketball decision-maker, the Cavs will likely hire (or promote from within) a GM to work under him. Currently, Koby Altman, an assistant under former General Manager Griffin, is manning the phone lines.

If today’s meeting goes well, Billups could indeed be hired. He’ll have to hit the ground running, though, as the Cavs are currently engaged in the trade market for Chicago Bulls swingman Jimmy Butler and Indiana Pacers forward Paul George.
