With the news of Kevin Durant’s decision to stick with the Brooklyn Nets, Donovan Mitchell has become the most highly-touted name available on the trade market. While teams like the New York Knicks and Miami Heat have been a few in hot pursuit of the Utah Jazz guard, the Cleveland Cavaliers have reportedly thrown their hat in the ring as well.
According to a recent report from NBA insider Ian Begley, the Cavs have actually “touched based” with the Jazz front office on what it would potentially take to pry away Donovan Mitchell.
Via SNY:
The Knicks are among several teams with interest in trading for Mitchell. The Cavs touched base with Utah about a Mitchell trade in recent days, per SNY sources. Cleveland’s level of interest in Mitchell is unknown but the Cavs have the young players and picks to put together a competitive package.
There’s little doubt that the Cavs have young pieces that the Jazz would covet in any deal for Donovan Mitchell. However, it doesn’t appear likely that they would give up any players from their core of Garland, Evan Mobley, or Jarrett Allen.
Without giving up any of their core pieces, it would be hard to imagine the Jazz striking a Donovan Mitchell trade to send him to northeast Ohio. But the idea of pairing Spida with Garland while having rim protectors in Allen and Mobley to back them up on defense is certainly tantalizing enough to make a phone call to check on the possibility.
