After two consecutive days of meetings between Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert and former Detroit Pistons great Chauncey Billups, an offer has been made.
Billups, 40, has been Gilbert’s top candidate for Head of Basketball Operations since the latter and former Cavs GM David Griffin decided to mutually part ways last week.
According to Jason Lloyd of The Athletic, Billups spent nearly all of Wednesday at Quicken Loans Arena, where he was introduced to several executives who would be working under his watch. Lloyd reports that Gilbert has offered Billups a five-year contract, that is yet to be accepted by the 2004 NBA champion.
Despite having no prior experience in the front office, Billups, a five-time NBA All-Star, projects as a good fit for the Cavs. He is friends with coach Tyronn Lue, and furthermore, players show a different level of respect to former players. It’s just that simple.
