LeBron James has been on an absolute tear this season for the Cleveland Cavs, and a lot of that has to do with his health more than anything. He’s appeared in all 73 games this season, averaging 27.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 9.1 assists, 1.5 steals, 1.0 block, and 1.8 three-pointers per game on 55% shooting from the field and 36.6% from beyond the arc.
This season, however, has also been special because with James on pace to play all 82, he’s reached the 2,000 point plateau for the 10th time in his career and for the first time since 2014, when he was still a member of the Miami Heat. James joined the likes of Utah Jazz legend Karl Malone as well as Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan as the only players with at least 10 seasons of 2,000 points.
If James continues on his 27.5-point-per-game scoring tear for the remainder of the season, he’ll be adding roughly 240-250 points to his current season total of 2,009 points. As of the Cavs victory, James currently trails the Houston Rockets’ James Harden for the league leader in total points by just two. Both the Cavs and Rockets have nine games remaining on their schedule, so we’ll see who ends up taking the win.
James’ current points per game average of 27.5, if it holds up for the season, would also be the highest since he averaged 29.7 points in the final year of his first stint with the Cavs back in 2009-10.
If you ask James, however, he’s not focused on any of that. The only ‘stat,’ if you will, he cares about is the chemistry, consistency, and health his team continues to build as they prepare for what they hope will be another lengthy postseason run. Should James lead his Cavs to the NBA Finals yet again, it will be his eighth consecutive Finals appearance as well as the ninth of his career.
