Now that Isaiah Thomas has already debuted for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Jose Calderon will be headed back to the bench and give up his spot to Thomas in the starting unit. While it could be seen as a demotion for many, the Cavs veteran thinks otherwise and is happy that he was able to help out during Thomas’ absence.

Calderon’s efforts have not gone unnoticed as he recently received a lot of praise from head coach Tyronn Lue. He gave him a of credit for “holding down the fort” during Isaiah Thomas’ recovery from injury. Lue cited Calderon’s professionalism as he was always ready to perform at a high level when needed.

“He held the fort down. He did a great job of just being professional, being a veteran, making shots, running the team, taking care of the basketball and just being ready when he’s called upon. He’s just been great for us.”

Jose Calderon was then asked how he feels now that he will return to his role with the Cavs as a reserve and said that he’s pleased that he was able to do his job well. Calderon then added, via Joe Vardon of Cleveland.com.

“I did my job, I did what they needed me to do,” Calderon said.

“I’m going to go back to my role, staying ready and keeping the other guys on the team sharp, and there is going to be some days when Isaiah can’t play or D Wade might need a break. And I’m a veteran and I can talk to the guys from the bench, whatever they want me to do.”

Jose Calderon’s comments definitely says a lot about how he is as a professional. The Cavs are fortunate to have a player like him, who has the team’s best interest in mind first and is ready to make sacrifices at all times.

Calderon will continue to be a constant source of wisdom off the bench while Isaiah Thomas returns to his old blazing ways.
