As this season’s trade deadline fast approaches, the belief that the Cleveland Cavaliers will make some moves is continuing to rise. There have been rumors about potential deals the franchise could make and one thing consistent with them is the inclusion of the Brooklyn Nets’ unprotected first round pick which they acquired last summer in the Kyrie Irving trade.

Many have chimed in on what they think the Cavs should do, but according to former Brooklyn Nets general manager Bobby Marks, he believes the best thing for Cleveland is to keep the prized pick instead. He then added, via Don McCormack of Amico Hoops, that unless LeBron James re-signs for the long term with his hometown team, the pick should be off the table for any possible trades they could make before next month’s deadline.

“The potential of an impact player in a strong June draft should outweigh what Cleveland could obtain on the trade market.”

“Unless LeBron James is willing to commit long term before the Feb. 8 deadline. Cleveland should put the Brooklyn pick in a vault and lose the combination.”

Marks certainly has a deep understanding of how NBA front offices work, as he has extensive experience being part of the Nets from 1995 to 2015. He is still active in the basketball world up to this day, currently serving as the NBA front office insider for ESPN.

It will be very interesting to find out how active the Cavs will be before the deadline should they opt to make some moves. Marks, though, has a strong argument, as the pick can serve as insurance for them if in case James signs somewhere else this coming summer. It will be a huge hit to them if he leaves, but their front office can soften the blow if they’ll be able to select one of the top prospects come draft day.
