The Cleveland Cavaliers are not losing Donovan Mitchell anytime soon. He is still with the Cavs and will continue to help the team on the court for the foreseeable future after agreeing to a three-year, $150.3 million extension with Cleveland. That is surely music to the ears of Cleveland fans who had been praying for this day to come.
Itâs just not the same case for the âexpertsâ who leaned heavily on the notion that Mitchell would get traded by the Cavaliers to another team, believing that the former Louisville Cardinals star had no intention of signing an extension with the Eastern Conference franchise.
One fan (Tony Pesta of Fear The Sword) decided to roll the tape showing the likes of Stephen A. Smith, Kendrick Perkins, and Bill Simmons among other personalities who either thought or relayed an idea they heard about Donovan Mitchell having played his last game already with the Cavs and that heâd soon be traded by Cleveland because of his supposed disinterest in playing for the team beyond the 2024-25 NBA season.
Whatâs clear now is that Mitchell has yet to play his final game in a Cavs uniform. He will be with Cleveland for years to come and he wonât be a free agent until at least the end of the 2026-27 NBA season. His extension contract with the Cavaliers includes a player option on the third year worth $53.8 million.
Judging from one of Mitchellâs initial reactions to his extension, it seems that there was never really a doubt in his mind that he would commit to a fresh contract with Cleveland. Despite the lure of potentially signing with a big-market team in 2025, Mitchell opted to stay in Cleveland and help the Cavs contend for an NBA title. He apparently likes the players around him and the organization enough (outside of the money, of course) to make the decision to run it back with the likes of Jarrett Allen, Darius Garland, and Evan Mobley.
While Cleveland doesnât have the bright lights of other NBA cities, it has a team already ready to seriously contend for an NBA title. With Mitchell, the Cavs have a genuine go-to scorer who can take over any game on any given night and heâs got a quality supporting cast and a new head coach in Kenny Atkinson, who could be the one who finally gets Cleveland over the hump in the playoffs.
Fans react to Donovan Mitchellâs new deal with the Cavs
Here are some of the many reactions to Adrian Wojnarowskiâs breaking news about Mitchell agreeing to an extension with the Cavaliers:
ââDoNoVaN MiTcHeLl wAnTs oUtââ
âBut but but big market media said!â
âBut I thought he hated Cleveland, the organisation, his teammates, Moondog, the fans & everything not named New York?â
âThank you for ending my delusion. I can be at peaceâ
âLakers really thought they was gone get himâ
âKnick fans were telling everyone all season this their guy, have fun with Julius Randle guysâ
âI heard Rob was cooking up a trade for him though đđđđâ
âAll small market teams & fanbases should rejoice.â
âGuess Cleveland gonna run it back for at least a couple more season. Garland needs to get back to 2022 form thoughâ
âWowâŠ. I thought he was gonna leave.â
âDonovan Michell should be applauded for staying in a small market like Cleveland instead of trying to sign elsewhere in a big market with a super team. Cleveland is a threat in the East if Mitchell can stay healthy.â
