Poor J.R. Smith. It’s been several weeks since the Hennessy-chugging, shirt-hating, Cleveland Cavaliers shooting guard became the basketball equivalent of Bill Buckner when he made one of the biggest blunders in the history of the NBA.
And now, she’s being roasted at the ESPY’s by Danica Patrick, of all people. Can you believe that? You better, since here’s a video evidence of it.
After drawing crickets by trying to roast LeBron James and his hairline, Patrick conveniently resorted to poking fun at J.R. Smith – and it worked!
If you’re in need of a refresher, it could be remembered that Smith failed to pull the trigger on what could have been a game-winning shot for the Cavs in Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors. With the score tied, Smith beat Kevin Durant for an offensive rebound with 4.5 seconds left to play. Seemingly unaware of the score and thinking that his team was up, Smith ran with the ball instead of taking a shot, paving the way for an overtime. Cleveland lost that game despite a 51-point outburst from James and since then, Smith has become a poster boy for players making boneheaded plays.
J.R. Smith appears to have moved on from that, though.
As for Patrick, she needs to send Smith a bottle of Hennessy for rescuing her from an awkward situation.
