New Cleveland Cavaliers big man Andre Drummond is expected to pick up his 2020-21 player option worth $28,751,775, according to Sam Amico of AllCavs.
The Cavs acquired Drummond on Thursday from the Detroit Pistons. Cleveland sent Detroit Brandon Knight, John Henson and 2023 second round pick:
Same goes with Andre Drummond to a lesser degree. He has a $29 million player option on his contract at the end of the year. A league source told SI.com he expects to exercise the option and views the Cavs as a viable long-term fit.
That would be just fine with the Cavs. Despite some popular opinion, they are not viewing Drummond as a piece merely to flip for more draft picks. Both sides want this to work.
Drummond is averaging 17.8 points, 15.8 rebounds and 2.8 assists this season. He’s shooting 53.0 percent from the field and 58.4 percent from the free-throw line.
The Cavs will use the rest of this season to determine if Drummond is a good fit next to guards Collin Sexton and Darius Garland. For his career, Drummond puts up 14.4 points and 15.8 rebounds per game.
The Cavs will miss the playoffs this season for the second consecutive season.
