“You can’t always get what you want, but if you try sometimes… You get what you need.”

That’s what Mick Jagger and The Rolling Stones taught us in the summer of 1969. Now, fast forward to 2017, and it seems that same rhetoric applies to Carmelo Anthony and Paul George, who were recently acquired by the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Had the NBA stars aligned just a bit differently, however, both Anthony and George could have been members of the Cleveland Cavaliers. In a recent SiriusXM interview, Anthony, now 33 years of age, revealed that there was a trade deal in place on draft night that would have sent the pair of stars to the Cavs.

Via ESPN’s Ian Begley:

Carmelo Anthony said in a SiriusXM interview that there was a trade in place on the night of the NBA Draft that would have sent both he and Paul George to Cleveland: “Me and PG have a very close friendship. Actually, it was funny because me and PG was supposed to be in Cleveland on draft night. We were communicating about that. The deal was actually done and it got called off on draft night, so me and PG stayed connected throughout the course of the season.”

Carmelo Anthony and Paul George could have been fine additions to the Cavs’ rotation, sure. After all, these are two gold medal Olympians we are talking about here. However, as we all know, that scheme never came to fruition. Now, with training camp under way and the start of the 2017-18 NBA season less than one month away, it’s safe to say that these players are ready to forget what might have been. It’s time to lock in on the present.
